Can I Use My Viscosity for Mac License On Windows?
Knowledge Base > Purchasing & Registering Viscosity > Can I Use My Viscosity for Mac License On Windows?

With the release of Viscosity for Windows we know some have been wondering if they can use their existing license of Viscosity for Mac to also register a copy of Viscosity for Windows.

Unfortunately the Viscosity Mac and Windows license systems are incompatible with each other, and hence a serial for Viscosity for Mac cannot be used to register Viscosity for Windows (and vice-versa). This wasn't an easy decision for us as we are fans of dual-licensing, and it would have eliminated many licensing headaches. However there were two main reasons behind this that forced our hand:

  • We wanted to maintain the low $9 price point, rather than having to increase it to cover the cost of development and support for both platforms. Most users only use Viscosity on a single platform, and so increasing the price seemed unfair on those users.
  • The Mac version's registration system has been exposed to hackers/pirates for almost 3 years now, and has almost reached its limit. While we still have a few piracy-stopping measures up our sleeves, we decided to come up with something completely new for the Windows version, as we wanted to avoid having to add draconian measures like "phoning home" checks.

Ideally any future software from us will be dual-licensed, although we're afraid for now Viscosity Mac and Windows are separate purchases.
